CRE Event Quick Details
If you already know about SCCA Race Experience, you can read the Supplemental Regulations and the SCCA Race Experience Rules for full details. However, if you are new to SCCA Race Experience, keep reading for a general overview of what it is, and how you can participate.
What is SCCA Race Experience?
SCCA Race Experience events focus on giving you a chance to go SCCA wheel-to-wheel racing at lower peak levels of performance and pressure than an SCCA Road Racing Event. This means you get to race with a little less pressure, a lot more coaching, and rules as simple as we can make it without compromising safety and good on-track attitudes and approaches.
Where is this event?
This event is at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC – a 2.27-mile road course about halfway between Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC. Nearby interstates include I-77 and I-20.
Who Can Race?
Anyone with a driver’s license, and any minor (14 15-years old) on their SCCA Novice Permit. That’s right – you don’t need an SCCA Racing License to participate in Race Experience.
If you haven’t raced before, have only raced a few times, or just might like some brushing up on your skills, there will be experienced driver coaches on hand to help you through the event.
Because there are mixed experienced levels on track – if you have an “off” or spin, you’ll come in for a quick check-in with the driver coach. Once we’re sure everyone is OK – you’ll be sent back on track. If there is contact with another car (or barrier) the check-in with the driver coach will be a little longer.
What Can Race?
This event is open to production-based cars and small-bore GT cars meeting SCCA Road Race safety requirements other than purpose-built racecars like Formula Cars, Sports Racers and Big Bore GT Cars and Pro series cars are not appropriate for this event.
This also means that your car will need to have all those racing things like a roll cage, racing seat, racing harness, window net, etc. If your car has run other organizations like ChampCar, AER, Lucky Dog Racing League – chances are it’s good to go, but our tech inspectors will double-check for you.
If you have questions about your specific car, please contact the registrar, and your question will be sent to the appropriate organizer.
What do I need?
Other than a good attitude and coming ready to make some new friends, this event requires drivers to have and use a driver’s suit, helmet, gloves, shoes, head & neck restraint device meeting specific requirements. Those full requirements can be found here. Like the vehicle – if your driver gear has been good for those other organizations in the past year or so – you’ll be good to go here.
What is the event structure like?
The first session on Saturday morning (15 minutes) will be a highway-speed pace session – to give you and others the chance to see the track before you worry about driving at speed/with passing.
The second session on Saturday will be a 15-minute session with passing. Then, there will be a 20-minute Race that afternoon.
Sunday will be a 15-minute warm-up session, a 15-minute qualifying session and then another 20-minute race. That’s six on-track sessions on track with two races.
